Final Demand Campaign
Torfaen Friends of the Earth activists gathered in Pontypool town centre on Saturday the 3rd of December to support the national campaign by Friends of the Earth for fair and realistic energy prices. The ‘Final Demand’ Campaign calls for an independent inquiry into the hold of the big six power companies over consumers and their influence over politicians as well as a continuation of support for clean British energy.
Friends of the Earth say that energy prices have rocketed this year because the big six are keeping us hooked on dirty, expensive fossil fuels and because our homes guzzle power and leak heat. Just six large energy companies supply 99% of our homes and they made £8.55 billion in 2010. Politicians and regulator Ofgem have questioned the power and dominance of the energy companies - but nothing's changed.
Carole Jacob (dressed as Scrooge in the photos), coordinator of Torfaen Friends of the Earth, said: "We were very encouraged by the support we received from the public. Our leaflets were very well received and we collected 128 signatures for the campaign to get David Cameron to set up a public inquiry into the big six energy companies."
